About your guide

I moved to Lisbon pulled by the call of “Saudade”, a mythical portuguese concept that mixes longing and melancholy, which defies true explanation in words but is best understood, however, through the mystical music of Fado. A musician and poet myself, I have become more and more enthralled by this ancient folk music and over the years have made friends with some fado singers, beginning to understand for myself the secrets of this musical heritage. My own knowledge of the subject has grown exponentially, and my passion for this part of Portuguese culture is what drives my desire to share it with visitors.

What we’ll do

This tour will give you a unique insight into the magical world of fado, with a private audience with my favourite fado singer and friend, Tiago. We’ll head to Mouraria, the birthplace of fado, where I’ll give you a brief introduction to the culture, before you see with your own eyes the wonderful power of this exceptional music. We’ll have some snacks and drinks and then we’ll wander through Alfama, where you’ll see where modern-day fado lives. I don’t believe that fado can be truly appreciated only on a surface level, which is why it is my purpose with this tour to draw you in to the enthralling story of this music, to allow you to engage emotionally with this sacred art, so that you’ll leave with a unique memory that will linger in your heart and soul forever.

What else you should know

Appetizers
Some Portuguese classics: chouriço, cheese and bread.
Beer and Wine

What to bring

Comfy shoes!

Where you’ll be…

We’ll start in Mouraria, tracing the roots of fado’s first singers and seeing the lasting impact they had on the neighbourhood. Next we’ll visit my favourite fado house, where my friends are waiting to give you a private show. There we’ll have some food and drinks, before heading to the Alfama neighbourhood, home to fado’s modern-day representations.
